Volkswagen Scirocco - Sky Drives

It’s over 30 years since the first Volkswagen Scirocco was launched. The first model’s concept was simple; take the running gear from the sensible-shoes Golf and wrap them up in a more exotic, Italianate body for a reasonable price.

The new car’s remit is broadly similar and with the excellent Golf GTI as a basis it promises to deliver the goods.

It’s a difficult car to pigeonhole, mainly because it doesn’t have any direct competitors yet. Expect to see a latter-day Ford Capri if the Scirocco proves to be the hit that everyone’s expecting.

On the outside
The Scirocco is a striking car. It’s more compact than pictures suggest and with the sort of presence that its more upright rivals could only dream of.

The squinting headlights and slim, two-bar grille will form the basis of all future VWs and it works well here with the large trapezoidal lower intake adding the sort of aggression you’d expect from a compact coupe. Its starkness allows the rakish proportions and bold, voluminous surfacing take the limelight.

It’s best viewed from the rear three-quarter, where the broad shoulders and boat-tailed upper volume form a clean, muscular rump.

The looks alone will be enough to tempt people out of more traditional hatchbacks.

The Mark 1 Scirocco was a great little car, especially the storm - went like stink, 1.6 L fuel injection 112hp engine, but heavy steering, poor rear legroom and poor brakes. The Mark 2 bigger and slightly heavier but still a good looking car, sharp and angular at the front and all curvy at the back, poor heavy brakes and heavy steering, slightly less rear and rear quarter vision than the mark 1 but with a huge load area ( I owned an '82 GL for 13 years ). The design of the car changed Mk1-Mk2 but was still recognisable as a Scirocco even through the evolution to the Corrado ( Scirocco 3 in my opinion ), the shape and design was still recognisable as a 'Scirocco'. The new Scirocco looks like a hybrid of Alfa/Seat/Mazda all thrown together into one package with a VW badge slapped on the front and back, I dont think the name suits the design of the car, I do realise that times have changed and cars are not exclusively designed by a person or a 'design house' to look good but have to meet stringent regulations, be more efficient and safer than the outgoing model. I think all cars will eventually look the same with a few minor changes to differentiate between makes and models - boring, sanitized and driver un-involvement at a new high. The 'Scirocco' and 'Corrado' name shifted a lot of cars for VW, they were basic, reliable, rot resistant ( not the Mk1 Scirocco ), fun to drive and economical - more so than some modern cars.

I have never been a VW fan but I strongly disagree with the views of the apparently naive commentators above, who have missed the point. This is a 'one-off' car - it stands out from the crowd. The new Scirocco is individual, balanced, pleasing to the eye and I would be surprised if it did not have an equal impact on the market as the original did. As an aside - I am 68, have owned almost fifrty cars from an original Mini-Cooper to a Railton Straight Eight but I fail to appreciate the tag of 'sexy' when applied to a car - unless that is you regard it as a member of the opposite sex.

V W had a chance to make a winner, instead it looks dull and uninspiring, come on VW bring back that market leading style you used to always have.
