The fastest Maserati ever

Maserati GranTurismo S - the fastest production Maserati ever

Maserati's GranTurismo S will cost from £89,600 when right-hand-drive models arrive here in the autumn.

The car, which was unveiled at this year's Geneva motor show, has a 4.7-litre V8 engine that puts out 431bhp and 361lb ft of pull.

That means the car does 0-62mph in 4.9sec and has a top speed of 183mph, making it the fastest-ever production Maserati. The standard GranTurismo records a 0-62mph time of 5.2sec and a top speed of 177mph.

The new car also has what Maserati calls an electro-actuated gearbox. The six-speed transmission works via elongated paddles on the steering column. The driver can also select an automatic gearchange mode.

Apart from the new engine and an £11,000 premium, the GranTurismo S distinguishes itself from the standard car by having bigger, 20-inch wheels, side skirts, black headlamps and a new integrated rear spoiler. It also has firmer suspension and uprated brakes.

Maserati claims the GranTurismo S is now a rival to the likes of the Porsche 911 Turbo and Aston Martin Vantage.

To enhance these credentials, the car also has a sports setting. Hit the sport button on the dash and gearchanges at high revs and high power take less time - just 100 milliseconds. Best of all, though, is the glorious roar the from the exhaust when in this setting.

If you're interested in running costs, you probably can't afford to buy a GranTurismo S. For the record, though, the car is capable of 17mpg on average and emits 387g/km of carbon dioxide.

UK buyers should be able to see at least left-hand-drive models at the British motor show in July.

• Maserati has also revealed that it is considering a used car scheme, along the lines of the Ferrari Approved Used programme. Used cars would be sold following factory checks, and come with extended warranties.
