Government Plans Driving Test Shake-Up

The government is planning a raft of changes to the driving test in order to reduce the high accident rates among young drivers. The on road test will be divided into a 20-minute test on manoeuvres like reversing round the corner and emergency stops and a 30-minute assessment of general driving ability.  During the practical test, learner drivers will be less molly coddled around the route too, being told the destination they must follow signs too.

Questions for the theory test will cease to be published too, meaning learners can’t just memorise the answers. Damn.

It’s even going be tougher for instructors as they will receive star ratings so that learners can make an informed choice based on previous pass rates.

So is this a good idea? Should the government have gone one step further and introduce curb limits on what young people can drive once the full license is issued? Have your say on the BLOG below:

mom there was no need to get nasty!!! i simply asked you to give a good reason why the test should not be made harder?? statistically young drivers and elderly drivers cause accidents so therefore by making the test harder we are surely trying to improve the driving standards of the younger drivers!!! What would you do then to make the roads safer ??? What would you do with regards to the elderly drivers???

today i received a comment from an instructor telling me/thanking me for my conduct on a driving test with respect to putting a candidate at ease etc!!! We (DSA) have come a long way from the old man in a mack with a grumpy face etc!!! every effort is made to put the candidate at ease!! however the fact that an examiner is watching them will allways put pressure on a candidate and may sometimes lead to faults occuring that they may not do any other time!! Its only what they do in that 30-40 minutes that we can assess!! yes it is easy for me to say make the test harder as i do not have anything to lose but the opinion i have given is a professional one based on experience. surely any parent who wants their child to be safe and live!! would like to see changes designed to improve the test therefore making their child drive to a higher standard and be safer for years to come!! would you want your child on the road unsafe????
