Everyone is so obsessed about Tata's impending purchase of Jag and Land Rover, they've forgotten Tata have created the world's cheapest car at £1,500.
Unfortunately that's what it will cost in India. Tata bosses say that although they could eventually bring the car to Europe they have no plans in the immediate future as they are busy trying to meet demand in the Asian market where sales could hit one million vehicles a year.
And it would need to be upgraded considerably on the inside to meet European tastes and together with added safety measures that would see the price rise to just under £4,000. But that would still make it Europe's cheapest car.
The Nano looks like a taller, older version of the Ford Ka and is powered by a tiny 623cc engine. It reminds me of the old Mork and Mindy TV show with the 'Nanoo nanoo' catchphrase - unfortunately the car is about as hi-tech as the eighties TV show was. To be fair, what do you expect for a car that's cheaper than a Plasma?
However for those on a shoestring budget and first-time buyers who just need to get from A to B this could be the perfect car.
