If you squint your eyes, ignore those impressive gullwing doors and try to imagine an interior that doesn’t involve floating chairs, you’re looking at the next generation Renault Megane Coupe. Sure it’s a concept, and one of the most stunning concepts on display here at Geneva, but according to Renault’s design director Patrick le Quement, this car is very close to the production-ready Megane Coupe that will debut at the Paris motor show in September.
Le Quement may be an innovator - this is the first concept cum production car to be entirely designed digitally – but the man blatantly has a ‘thing’ for big butts. The Megane Coupe is an imposing car measuring 4514mm in length, but all your attention is focussed on the squat, chunky derriere once again. This pert bottom is exaggerated by the glasshouse elevation and complimented by the layered LED brake lights that wrap around the rear's muscular surfacing.
But does all this arse attention point to the Megane Coupe being rear-wheel driven? Sadly not. A front-wheel drivetrain is already in place for production and this concept is actually powered by a 200bhp, 2.0-litre turbodiesel engine. Sure it may be an oil burner, but the Megane Concept can still hit 62mph in 7.2secs.
Renault fans have been waiting for a design renaissance for some time and the Megane Concept could be just the catalyst. Let’s hope now that this fluid, sportier styling features in the entire Megane range when it goes on sale in 2009.
