Christmas came and went without incident and our long term Ford Mondeo is now cruising through February, fast becoming loaded with miles and anecdote. It’s no surprise to anyone here that nearly ten thousand miles is emblazoned on the digital instrument binnacle. The Ford Mondeo has proven to be my perfect partner for any 200-mile trip back up north – it’s refined and can keep pace with pretty much anything that enters the fast lane.
You also end up feeling much fresher than anyone who’s just spent five hours (accounting for probable carnage on the M6) behind the wheel of a car really ought to. It’s the little design details that make it such a natural cruiser, like the powerful headlamps, the infinite number of positions for the driver’s chair, the way the electric window buttons are ergonomically sloped towards the driver, it all helps.
As a result, nothing shy of £35k demolishes long distance journeys quite like the Mondeo. True, this is the car’s bread and butter environment but it’s when this long distance ability can be matched with such a finely balanced chassis and uninterrupted steering that the package becomes so compelling. And fun. It’s still a very big car, no question, but it’s an easy car to drive.
