Cheap Cars to avoid the credit crunch

Struggling with your finances but still need to get mobile? Here are five sets of cheap wheels worth considering. You’re not going to be breaking any speed records with this lot, but you will be motoring for very little moola. Stuck in such impecunious times, let’s raise a glass of something reasonably priced to that.

1. Kia Picanto

With its cute Noddy car styling and modern interior, the Kia Picanto offers fantastic value for money. The recent facelift has given the Picanto a better level of standard equipment too, including a bespoke CD-radio-iPod unit. Engines have remained unchanged though, and while the 62bhp 1.0-litre petrol engine is eager-revving, it does need to be worked hard to make anything that can be remotely described as progress. Better tell your passengers to bring a book for the ride home…

Model Kia Picanto 1.0 5dr
Price £5995
Engine 999cc, 61bhp at 5600rpm, 64lb ft at 2900rpm
Performance 0-60mph in 16.4secs, top speed 90mph, 57.6mpg (combined)
Emissions 117g/km

i noticed all these CHEAP runabout cars featured here none are diesel, people may not know this but in order to get the lower road tax £35 per year to £110 most cars that fit are diesel, i always thought you got a diesel if you did silly amount of miles every year in fact a dealer selling you a new car will advise you away from a diesel unless you do more than 20,000 miles a year. we know that the tax is worked out on co2 emissions and diesels give less, crazy to think thou that the people doing all the running about all over the country n use the roads more pay less road tax than me with a new 1.4 bravo, to me a 1.4 is a small engine trying to go cheap but my tax will be about £150 per year id of been better with the 1.6 td that has low emissions and a road tax band of £35 but as i said i dont do the mileage to justify the diesel crazy to think that the people using the roads more will pay less to do so!

If everyone put several pounds less petrol in their car each week ( I put ten pounds less than last summer) The price of fuel would plummet. Plan your journeys before you set off and kill several birds with one stone instead of several journeys to the shops then to the bank etc. walk a bit further and if you have a bus pass, use it, even if it's for only part of your journey.

it is all well and good having small "greener" cars at reasonble prices, but to be honest given the choice you would not pick any of the above to drive everyday,we are being forced to buy boring odd looking cars because driving as a pleasure is a thing of the past.as you all know we are being squeezed economicly to with in an inch our financial lives and to me it is all very hypercritical when most of these cars are made in china, india and korea and we are all aware what they are doing to save the planet. Most of our manufactouring as it happens!!! on that note im of for spin in my mg v8

Proton Savvy looks the biz & Lotus handling to boot! It's juts a pity none of the cars featured has main dealers on every corner, & I fear is that the REAL reason most people don't but this sort of car. Any enviromental issues people may have, & for all the best will in the world, it's no good if you have to drive say 20-30 miles for spare parts or main dealer service. Perhaps if the government are REALLY SERIOUS about getting people in cars like this they should offer tax breaks to main dealers that sell only small efficient cars? Anyway with the current price of go-go juice 50 mpg sounds good!

A car is a car. it keeps you dry, better than walking, aand quicker. Why all the fuss for fuel guzzling big staus efforts. I am happy to say that I am confident enough in my self not to need a big flashy car to show how great I am. I'd drive one of these little cars any day.
