Citroën C5 - Sky Drives

Citroën are hoping to up the ante with its new C5 family car. Its predecessor was an unloved, awkward-looking barge which sold mainly on its heavily discounted prices.

This new model is aiming at the class-leading Ford Mondeo and Volkswagen Passat, as well as keeping an eye on BMW and Audi with the high-end models.

On the outside
In design terms the large family car market is currently the most fertile ground within the industry and the C5 is right at the cutting edge of this zeitgeist; it’s arguably the most avantgarde mass-produced saloon on sale.

It consolidates the high points of Citroën’s quirky heritage with details such as the concave rear window but this time it’s executed with a sense of integrity. While the quality is Teutonic, the flair could not have been delivered from anything other than a Gallic pen.

If you want to stand out from the rep crowd, there’s no better place to put your money.

If you're not going for the hydractive suspension, don't bother getting this car. The suspension takes some time to get used to, but when you're there, there's no going back to steel-sprung models. It really makes the difference on long trips; you don't get tired from driving. You still feel fresh and relaxed after 7h of driving! If this doesn't matter to you, you will find this car boring and bland.

Looks better than the Mondeo and Passat in my opinion. I am sure you would get used to the 'fiddly' buttons. As for the comment on reliability - I think you will have to wait and see, Citroen seem to have made a huge effot with the C5 and are determined to ensure reliability is improved. However I have owned an old C5 now for 5 years and it is a whopping 140k on it. I can't agree with the comment about reliability - I have owned Citroen's for years and never had a problem. I am sure many people have had problems - You can't judge one car on reliability - I have seen plenty of Vauxhalls, Fords & VW's that have broken down (and not old ones)

My car is due for replacement next year and whilst my money is on the Insignia you definitely can't ignore the C5 and I will certainly be taking a test drive. Looking at the comments on suspension I would probably go for the steel sprung VTR+ with a few extras. The C5 certainly looks the part and from the outside wouldn't look out of place on BMW/Merc forecourt.
