2009 already looks set to be the year of the snake. Check out the 540bhp Ford Mustang Shelby GT 500. OK so the ultimate Ford Mustang that's been fettled by the creator of the Shelby Cobra may not be the safest thing to be driving on a fresh winter morning, nor will it be the salvation of Ford USA’s financial woes, but it’s already made our lottery-winning wish list.
The Shelby Mustang GT 500 will be on display at the Detroit Auto Show later this month, but let’s hope we’ll be able to hear it too. Under that deep vented bonnet is a supercharged 5.4-litre V8 that turns out 540bhp and 510lb ft of torque. That makes it one of the most powerful ‘Stangs ever and well worthy of the Carroll Shelby badgework.
Shelby was in fact consulted for the development of this car so it’s the real deal rather than just a tribute. And just like the classic Shelby Mustangs of the 60s, this one should be every bit as full-on to drive. Apparently, there’s a three-mode stability control system fitted as standard, plus enough room in the glovebox for an extra pair of pants.
Outside, there have been numerous amendments to the bodywork both to make the car look more aggressive and to help it cope with the extra performance, while inside gets some bespoke interior trim.
Drop-top fans will also be pleased to hear that a convertible version is on its way too, the only difference being you ride on 18in alloys rather than the Coupe's 19s and you can enjoy the sunshine and that noise a little more.
