In the past month, the Range Rover Sport has progressed from sophisticated urban runabout to consummate business tool. My job these days includes lots of film production, and the Land Rover could lay claim to the role of assistant producer.
First it was off to Wales on a freezing cold winter’s day for our Winter Driving shoot. For two days, the Sport was asked to chase a spiritedly driven Audi R8 and Porsche 911 Turbo. This it did with aplomb, while successfully carrying the crew’s kit. The Landie might not be genuinely sporty to drive, but it is capable of covering ground at a speed that belies it bulk. Compared with Range Rover’s of old, this car’s handling is nothing less than a quantum leap. Body roll is remarkably well checked and although it never quite disguises its mass, there’s still fun to be had in chasing down more focussed machines. It also makes a fine portable office. The built-in Bluetooth phone works superbly well, the on-board tv managed to keep the crew amused and the built-in fridge is ecologically unsound but wonderfully indulgent. And while the rear accommodation could be a tad more accommodating for people, it’s great at swallowing camera kit.
