The Red Bull Flugtag is one of the most hilarious events I’ve seen all year and a perfect excuse for the drinks company to use its ‘Gives You Wings’ slogan. A whopping 80,000 people visited Hyde Park this weekend to watch nearly 100 Caractacus Potts wannabes defy gravity and take to the skies in their budget winged paraphernalia. Well, kind of… You see, when some of these contraptions ‘took off’ from a 20ft ramp above the Serpentine, the crowd soon found out that most had the aeronautical qualities of a fridge. But flying the furthest would be too logical an assessment to secure victory alone, so the Red Bull Flugtag used a celebrity judging panel including Strictly Come Dancing’s Craig Revel-Horwood, Carrie Grant and Jodie Kidd, to award additional points for creativity, pre-flight performance as well as a crowd ‘clap-o-meter.’ Team Glad Winners from Southampton, flew an impressive 17.5 metres in style to get the top spot, though why they then didn’t use the opportunity to drown Revel-Horwood I’m not sure.
