Cheap Cars to avoid the credit crunch

Struggling with your finances but still need to get mobile? Here are five sets of cheap wheels worth considering. You’re not going to be breaking any speed records with this lot, but you will be motoring for very little moola. Stuck in such impecunious times, let’s raise a glass of something reasonably priced to that.

1. Kia Picanto

With its cute Noddy car styling and modern interior, the Kia Picanto offers fantastic value for money. The recent facelift has given the Picanto a better level of standard equipment too, including a bespoke CD-radio-iPod unit. Engines have remained unchanged though, and while the 62bhp 1.0-litre petrol engine is eager-revving, it does need to be worked hard to make anything that can be remotely described as progress. Better tell your passengers to bring a book for the ride home…

Model Kia Picanto 1.0 5dr
Price £5995
Engine 999cc, 61bhp at 5600rpm, 64lb ft at 2900rpm
Performance 0-60mph in 16.4secs, top speed 90mph, 57.6mpg (combined)
Emissions 117g/km

I would rather walk than buy a car from Koreans who boil dogs and cats alive before eating them.

There's also the Citroen C1/Peugeot 107/Toyota Aygo. I had a C1, which was an excellent car - typically got 60 mpg on a "combined" cycle, and the road tax was £35.
